Heartburn during pregnancy?

Most likely many women (reports state almost about 80% ) experience heartburn during pregnancy.

What causes heartburn during pregnancy ?

During pregnancy the placenta produces the hormone progesterone. This hormone relaxes the valve that separates the esophagus from the stomach keeping the stomach acid and the food usually out of the esophagus. If the muscle is relaxed the stomach acids are backing up and that is the cause of the heartburn. The same effect on the muscle is caused by alcohol or muscle relaxants.

Late in pregnancy the baby’s growth leads to stomach acids being backed up into the esophagus.

Safe actions recommended:

The first action to take while pregnant is avoiding heartburn triggers such as Spicy foods, alcohol, coffee, fatty foods, mint, muscle relaxants, sodas, stress and Drinking or eating large quantities at a time.
